Hole to China

Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI), Wendover, UT - 2009

Lucy Raven, presented her experimental photo animation, China Town, about global copper production. Raven screened her film at The Center for Land Use Interpretation, in Wendover, UT and then led a tour of the regional copper mines that informed her work. These sites included the Bingham Canyon Mine in Salt Lake City, UT, and the Robertson Mine in Ely, NV. The Land Arts students then collaborated with Raven on the project, Hole to China, installed in front of the CLUI Support Unit, Wendover, UT.

COPPER

I heard you outside my window tonight,
looked out just in time to see your taillights
go right by. It must be the millionth time
and I know it won't be the last but I also
know where you're going this time.

I saw your ticket to Vancouver
and I can picture the train waiting for you on the edge of town
snorting and impatient
here in Wendover.

The last time I saw you you had dirt in your teeth.
You had gold in your hair.
You had a look in your eye, and I know exactly
what it meant, and what put it there.

They keep inviting you back to China and
you can't say no.
They keep inviting you back to China.
Where else do you have to go?

You know I'll be here in Utah
next time you come back around.
You know I'll be bouncing back and forth between
here and Nevada, watching the moon and the casinos
duke it out, waiting for you on the edge of town
snorting and impatient
here in Wendover.
